Crack

Such disappointment. The heirloom Black Russians are not quite right.

Every one of them: soft, dimpled and curvaceous with a crack right up middle.

Only I could try for tomatoes and end up with ... bottoms.

  1. to much water the last 1 -3 days before this happens??? If I over water after my tomatoes have decided on their size - it causes them to crack (grrr). If I get them early enough they are still safe to eat..

  2. I was going to say teh same thing as Sarah. You need to water tomatoes consistently - when they have a big splurge of water after a certain point the flesh grows faster than the skin and they split.

By the way, love your blog.

  4. Oh, tomatoes, why won't you ripen easily?? We water every 12 hours & i have the children pick them by size, let them ripen on the window sill or the second they are prefect for us to eat, the worms find them first!! Love Posie

  7. I am a little out of my depth here as nary a tomato have I grown. But, perhaps some next season will find the tomatoes transformed into another body part? :)

  8. We grew Black Russians for the first time this year and so far, so good, but it has been an unusually dry summer in Qld this year. The black spot on our other tomatoes is another story entirely. *grumble grumble*

  10. Do they still taste OK? I hope so...! Ours are delicious when we get to them before the birds, or the 13 month old (who seems to think that just-about-to-start-ripening-tomatoes are de-lic-ious. Grrr.).

  11. Make chutney with them and no-one will know about their bootylicious beginnings.

  12. I wonder what you'd end up with if you tried to grow bottoms!

  14. ROFL at 'crack'. Maybe you should fashion some low hanging pants for them to show off their 'tradie's crack' LOL

  15. I have been pulling mine off the vine at the first tinge of colour and leaving them on the window sill. So far so good with this method (touch wood).
