A fraud in our midst

Please choose the correct answer. The scarf wearer is smiling ...

  1. nervously - wondering if she will fall off the child step stool while attempting to take this photograph in the bathroom mirror
  2. proudly - wearing her first knitted accessory
  3. uneasily - wondering if anyone will pick that the knitting is a cheat

I finished this cosy scarf in the wee small hours of Sunday morning and have been wearing it since. While I'm very pleased with the end product, I can't help but have mixed feelings about its creation. You see, I used a circular knitting loom.

Loom knitting is so quick and easy. The stitches are all regular. Tension remains even. You start and finish a row with the same number of stitches. And dropped stitches are a rarity. Its brilliant.

But what do the people who use two clicketty-clack needles make of loom knitting? Is it a bit of smoke and mirrors trickery? A knitting sham? Is it the same as mixing ½ cup of oil and two eggs into a store-bought packet mix and saying that you like to bake cakes?

Well, while I ponder all this, I'm off to do a bit more counterfeit casting-on ...

  1. Hmmm, I'm sure there are purists who would frown upon this wonderful invention. Just as there are even more hardcore puists who probably sniff if you haven't spun your own yarn first... but I think it is FABULOUS and I want one!

  2. Who cares, I say, the end result is the best bit. I watched you do it and thought it looked neato!

  3. I say who cares too! You have done a great job - i pick answer 2! A loom is probably the only way i could ever make myself a scarf, i am a useless knitter:-)

  4. It looks fabulous. I agree with the others - who cares what tools were used to make it. It looked pretty fancy to me on Saturday anyway.

  12. I say knitting is knitting.... it doesn't matter what instrument of craft you used, it's the end product that matters (and it looks gorgeous)

  14. Nothing fradulent about creating something crafty, no matter what tools you use. I think you may just start the newest trend! Now where did I put that knitting nancy?

  15. its not cheating, you still need to use your hands. I think a knitting machine is cheating, but it doesn't really matter in the end. Its the end product that matters and your scarf looks great :)

  16. I'm a knitter, and I don't think it's really cheating. If you ever try to knit again with two needles you'll find that you'll understand it more, because it looks essentially the same on a knitting loom as it does on two needles. If you make a mistake you can say, "oh, that loop goes through here," because you know what knitting is supposed to look like through using a knitting loom. And besides, any fun with yarn is awesome! :)
