Sundress

WANTED ...
Suggestions for suitable ladies' sundress pattern.
May take up to 3.2 m fabric, as pictured above.
Am willing to purchase additional fabric as a contrast, as needed.
Design must be pretty and feminine; evocative of summer.
Prefer a timeless classic.
Will ideally camouflage various figure flaws between neck and ankles.
Must specifically hide tubby tummy, large bust, and thunder thighs, without need for super-stretchy, hold-it-all-in wonder undies.
Highly regarded: ability to disguise unfortunate re-positioning of natural waistline (following pregnancy).
Should be suitable for crawling on floor and playing with diggers and fire engines.

Amy Butler's "Morning Glory in Gold" (part of Lotus fabric collection) found on sale at Patchwork House, Hawthorn on the weekend.

  1. Gosh, when you find that pattern, could you pass it along to me? It sounds perfect - especially the thunder thighs part, although I would add a need for disguising an enormous bum. :-))

The fabric is fun and charming. Great sale buy! Definitely will look good among the diggers!

  2. Great find! I can't wait to find out which dresses people suggest - I need to make one too and have the same Mummy shape. (Got to love that empty, saggy baby house....NOT) Although it's not a dress, I can recommend the Amy Butler Barcelona skirt for being kind to a non stick figure.

  11. I got all excited - 10 comments - wow, you must have so many suggestions for a great sundress!

Sadly disappointed. Not that I'm a dress wearer, but I'm always hopeful that I'll find the right pattern.

  14. Hmmmmmmm - I'm joining the list of those waiting for the miracle dress! Lovely fabric.

I'm partial to 50's style dresses myself - you were meant to have a figure then!

  15. Me too! If you find the pattern, do let us know. I think everyone of us wants that pattern too.

  16. I've got one that I reckon is pretty good (don't know about it hiding the bust, but it does flatter it, and covers that tummy, thighs etc quite nicely). It's on my blog somewhere - oh, here it is! Simplicity 3867 - http://thornberry.wordpress.com/2008/02/03/freyas-fabulous-fortieth-dress/ - but you'd need to check if your fabric had enough drape. Yes, arms are still on display - but you said a sundress!

  17. Oh I so want that pattern too!!!

  18. I have a suggestion of what to look for in a pattern that might help.

In my experience, anything that gathers right under the bust and then drops whith a full-ish A-line skirt looks really flattering. A lot of dresses that I have seen around for summer are pretty much just a sack, and they end up looking like you are wearing a big old t-shirt - not flattering!

Spaghetti straps are great for summer, I also wear them with a little white or black tee under, looks really cute and hides the tops of the arms!

  19. oohhh, I thought what a great idea and lots of suggestions for the perfect dress (except you forgot to say something that hides upper arms too.) But everyone is just putting in a request for this elusive dress pattern! I made one that was a New Look or Mc Calls wrap/ cross over dress with a slight A line to the skirt part, great for hiding larger bottom areas but enough shape not to be baglike!. (I just had a rummage around but couldn't locate it, sorry I can't give you exact numbers) I made it in a bright red floral/paisley and I've had quite a few compliments while wearing it. Oh it also has a little cap sleve in it. It can also be worn over jeans or pants so making it easier to grovel on the ground with tractors and trucks!
