Shower cap

Link: Shower cap tutorial (includes PDF for download)

I'm not too proud. I'll admit it. I have some definite nanna tendencies.

You see, I'm partial to things like: bed socks at night; a Thermos flask of coffee whilst on a long drive; packet mix French-onion soup as an exotic dish flavouring; big undies on occasion; and wearing a shower cap whilst bathing, so as not to spoil my "do".

Note to self: 40% of employers now check out potential employees on social networking sites. If I wish to ever re-enter paid workforce, probably best not to inappropriately reveal underwear preference to world.

I've been in need of a new shower cap for ages. The elastic in the treasured favourite went kaput long ago, so I have been balancing a floppy circle of fabric on my head. Quite an ineffectual idea really.

So time for a new one. After all the sickies were in bed last night, I had a little time up my sleeve (thanks to my wonderful mum who had vacuumed, mopped floors and ironed during the afternoon). I was quite pleased to have a new shower cap whipped up in less than an hour. Just in time to have a cup of cocoa, then an early night, snuggling up to the hottie (hot water bottle, that is).

If there are any other nannas out there who are interested in a short shower-cap how-to, make yourselves known (if you dare) and I will post something later this week.

Just remember ... a potential employer might use this against you in the future.

  3. Eh...I never do shower caps, cause my hair is that unfortunate variety that goes stringy if left unwashed longer than a day, but if I *did*, that would be a mighty cute shower cap. :p

  4. this post made me laugh our loud!
I am such a nanna. I have to ask myself before I buy clothes, is this targeted for the early bird crowd. I even keep a tissue up my cardi sleeve when I have a cold.

  7. Don't worry - you're not alone, I've already revealed my underwear preferences and let me tell you, it's not pretty. Hopefully its been buried under a pile of other stuff.

Is that your shower cap? My goodness - that is fantastic - super fantastic.

I love nanna tendencies. I've got a few of my own. And I've still got a few teenage tendencies too. Just mixing up the old and the new.
But man, that shower cap is fantastico (and I thought you were convalescing)!

  10. I'm a huge fan of the big undies. I used to live with my Nanna who used to wear really skimpy lacy undies (bit of a goer was old Nan!). I am sure that anyone checking out the clothes line would have got our undies mixed up. Knickers in a twist, I suppose.

  11. I would love to learn how to make a shower cap! I'll have to admit, I don't really use them..but I would still love to try and make one :D

P.S I like wearing big undies - they are comfortable! But shhhhh don't tell anyone ;)

  12. There's nothing more comforting than wearing a pair of too-big cottontails. And yeah for the thermos. I'm not a french onion soup person - but I do seem to use a lot of the Continental Hearty Beef soup packets.

Yes! post a tut! I don't wear them (hair is super short and I wash it every morning) but my mum does and I see a nice present for Christmas coming up!

  13. I'm with Katie - I love a tea cosy, a thermos, and have several shower caps, depending on mood.... As for big undies, I'm with Bridget Jones on that! Superb sewing effort, I'm all for that how-to please!

  16. Well, I think everyone knows my preference for underwear!
I love that you wear a shower cap! I used to wear one til it got all mouldy and had to be retired to the bin, now I wear a spa towel (so easy to make - might do a quick tutorial myself!).

  17. Ooooh I was looking for a shower cap tutorial last year and was unsuccessful. So I for one would absolutely love it! I think there is a little nana in all of us isn't there. And at least a future employer would know what a wonderful sense of humour you have!!

  18. I'm a nanna girl myself! I love the showercap :)

  20. I love the shower cap and tute (thank you!). I've been searching for one that isn't just the nasty plastic type I take from hotels for ages with no success. I'm away to dig out the necessary materials and create something fabulous!

  21. I am so totally a grandma. I'm using the free shower cap I got the last time we stayed in a hotel. The elastic is in a sorry state, though not quite gone. I vote for a tutorial! (and my current employer googled me before I got interviewed ... but I'm a programmer, so it's expected.)

  22. Oops. I just noticed the link to the tutorial. Yay!

  23. I've been itching to make a shower cap because I hate the loser ones they sell in the drug store. This one is so cool!

  24. Thanks for the great instructions!! I made one for my mom out of a vintage fabric and it's adorable...but it ended up a bit small. I'm working on a 2nd one with an extra 2 inches to it, which will hopefully fit ALL her thick hair.

I almost think that it could benefit from being a bit larger...because you can always have a larger shower cap that's puffier.

  25. I have always purchased shower caps, but now I think it is time to make my own customized shower cap and save some pennies, your blog is really helpful!

  26. I have just brought a handmade one at a market and I just love to look at it.... So glad I found this tutorial so I can now make one too :o) I think it will make a great present for my Nana too :o)
