My vintage childhood

Vintage Enid Blyton book collection

This is a public service announcement: you might want to check the cupboard / attic / shed / roof / under-the-house.

There's a phenomenon (natural, I'm told) occuring in spots where childhood treasures have been packed away. You see, I recently opened some boxes and all my toys and books had vanished.

In their place was something else altogether. Something from another era. Something that evoked a feeling of nostalgia. Something, quite possibly classified as collectible.

Vintage Lego people

I meant to warn my younger sister too. I really did. It looks like I was a bit too late. Look what I found at her place.

(She is quite possibly going to kill me for refering to her books and Lego as vintage)

Kill may be too strong a word....
it is a bit soul destroying to find that my childhood is now vintage!!!!!!
I am a terrible hoarder and suspect I have many decades of vintage amongst my belongings. Last night I watched a tv show featuring a family from England that is living in a 1970s and then 1980s house hold of belongings - I marvelled that they would be able to stock a whole house with gear from the era - maybe I should have just taken a look in my 'treasure boxes' to realise it wasn't that difficult!

  3. Wonderful treasures!!! I've already started a box for my daughter as my mother kept very little from my own childhood and my older sister seems to have claimed everything else, even if it had been passed along to me as a handmedown. Harruuumph. Now I have issues...and will probably end up needing a storage container for all the stuff I'll accumulate for mini-me. eeeeeek

  4. I still have my Enchanted Wood and Magic Faraway Tree books, they have never gone out of style. And one of my daughters is reading the Wishing Chair at school, and loving it. Everything old is new again, baby! And I hope I don't get referred to as vintage, it's a bit scary isn't it? xo

  5. The thing that has me completely confused, is when did you take that photo of my shelf? I even have the same not-quite-Enid, Pollyanna book on my shelf!

  7. I have my mother's original hard cover copy of Blinky Bill which I love having and look forward to reading to the kiddly winks very soon. But all my childhood books- Nancy Drew full collection in hard cover, my Enid Blytons, huge range of Archie comics etc got traded in to the 2nd hand book place so that I could get MORE books to read. I wish my parents had told me about this natural phenomenon!

  9. One of my friends had the full collection of the "Famous Five" and "Secret Seven". I was so jealous. I didn't have many books - Mum took us to the library all the time, but I have them all and most of my toys are on a shelf in the bookcase - looking quite vintage.

  13. Umm, I'm not too sure what you mean.
You see those are the EXACT Enid Blyton books I grew up with and surely I am not old enough for my childhood treasures to have reached the 'vintage' stage??
    Then again... oh dear...

  14. The top photo looks like one of Little Miss's book shelves. It's cheaper to buy the old ones, nowadays, when gollywogs were golloywogs and Dick and Fanny reigned!!
