Parenting is a minefield

Speaking to you child about their artwork ...

Right
Ask open questions.
For example: "Tell me about your picture"

Wrong
Wild guessing.
For example: "Whoa there ... is that a skull and crossbones?"
(The answer was "No daddy, its me with my big happy smiley face". Ooops!)

For some interesting information about the stages of child drawing development see this link.

  2. I was talking to a friend last night who told me about being called to her daughters school to "please explain", as her 9 year old daughter had written a story titled 'Death' in which emus try to take over the world, killing the children in a family and causing the mother to commit suicide. Now that's a minefield!
